Last week’s killings of RSS and CPM men in Kannur is the latest incident in a three-decade-old battle being fought on imagined ideological lines. Our correspondent travels through the district where violence has maimed as many as it has killed.
Her five-year-old daughter Ashna was holding her hand and the bomb hit the child. It tore off Ashna’s right leg. Shanti says she didn’t even feel the sharpnel slice her own abdomen and mangle the left foot of her two-year-old son she was holding.
That was eight years ago on September 27, 2000. A series of surgeries later, 13-year-old Ashna, in Class VIII now, hops about her small unplastered home on one leg. She dreams of becoming a doctor, a “village doctor”. For many years, her father used to carry her home from school, the stump of her leg bleeding inside the prostheis.
Ashna’s father, Koota Nanu, who used to run the village teashop in Kannur’s Poovathur, says he had known the man who threw that bomb for years, a mason in the neighbouring village and an RSS worker. Nanu swears they had never had a quarrel. But that day the man was among an armed RSS mob pursuing Congress workers fleeing from a fight at the village school across the road, where voting was going on in the local polls.
Nanu claims to have no ill will for the bomb thrower. “We have run into each other many times since, even at times when I carried Ashna to the village market. We just try not to look at each other. I hear he wept for his mistake soon after.” The case, with 14 RSS men in the accused list, is still going on in the local court.
The Kannur blood game has mostly been a Red vs Saffron show but the Congress too has been pitching in with equal fervour. So far, since the killings began in the 1970s, close to 300 people have been injured. The targets are mostly low-level party workers or sympathisers, usually picked at random to quickly even the scores after each killing.
Nanu and his brother were Congress supporters. The RSS mob had rushed to look in their homes for the escaped quarry. Unknown to Shanti and her kids standing near their front door, they came in the way. In Kannur’s political killing fields, people have been maimed or killed for less.
Those like 24-year-old Prasoon, an RSS worker of Peruthattil village. Five years ago, on 14 July 2003, he was playing cricket with his friends at their village ground. Prasoon was about to run up to bowl when three local CPM men he knew clapped and gestured at him from the ground’s edge. He walked up to them, but saw more men come quietly out of the shadows towards him.
“I tried to run but three of them caught and pinned me down on the ground. The others waved swords to keep my friends off. They hacked off my left wrist, then removed my left leg above the knee with an axe.” The doctors sewed back the severed wrist but the leg couldn’t be put back and Prasoon, who once cleaned cement trucks on the side to support his lorry driver father, gets around on a prosthesis, probably for all his life.
All of 19 then, Prasoon had never got into a fight with anyone. But he bore the brunt of an earlier attack by the RSS on a young man of the CPM in another part of the district. And it’s always been Our Dead and Maimed versus Their Dead and Maimed here. Statistics are deadly important to keep the ranks from eroding, and scores must be evened quickly, convincingly, openly. Prasoon, young and a regular at the local RSS shakha, was too tempting a target to miss.
IT’S some 30 years now since this surreal war of statistics pitched on imagined ideological planes, began here with bombs, swords, knives, and axes. “As of last week, the RSS-BJP, the Congress and the police have killed 149 of our comrades here. We don’t have the list of our men who lost arms, legs, eyes—there are too many,” says P. Sasi, senior CPM leader and its new district secretary at Kannur.
At the newly built RSS office in Kannur’s Thalassery, mounted photos of 56 Sangh men—and a woman—bombed or cut to pieces by the CPM look down from an entire wood-paneled wall (those too poor to have left behind even a photo have a flower instead, with the name scrawled below). It’s just a partial list, the wall just cannot hold more photos.
The Congress is not keeping a strict count anymore. “I personally know well over 50 of our men here who have lost their limbs,” says K. Sudhakaran, former minister and the Congress’s powerful ex-district secretary, who escaped many attempts on his life and is accused of organising many attacks on his political foes.
The ranks die and become martyrs in brick memorials on Red or Saffron village junctions, but not too many Kannur leaders want to be caught without a gun handy. Kannur is where leaders like the CPM’s central committee member E.P. Jayarajan walks around with a bullet still lodged inside his head after a political attempt on him a few years ago. It is also where local Marxist satrap, politburo member and state CPM secretary Pinarayi Vijayan must carry his .38 revolver at all times—remember the stir at Chennai airport last year when he inadvertently carried bullets into the security check.
THIS is also a region where unemployment is galloping and where few investors are stepping in. Parties vie to draw in the swelling army of jobless young men. The local handloom industry, once India’s most active, is collapsing in this “city of looms and lores”. The ruling CPM, which was actually born in Kannur in 1930 and had bagged over 60 per cent of the votes polled even in the last local elections, has no solution. Famously commanding many thousands of crores worth of assets, even the party’s biggest showpiece cooperative hailed internationally, the Dinesh Bidi Cooperative, has crumbled despite many Government- funded resuscitation bids. But the CPM still commands most of Kannur’s surviving little cooperatives, most offering ready liquid cash for party-sponsored initiatives.
Bomb making, however, is looking up. “Enough bombs are made and stocked here to last a long time. It’s a political activity, very little is for non-political use. We can’t go beyond certain limits to catch them,” a senior police official admitted. Even last week, after seven RSS and CPM men were chopped to death here in a space of four days and RSS and the CPM mobs spent time throwing scores of bombs at each other at half a dozen a village junctions, the police had seized no more than 41 bombs as of March 13.
Bombs come in many forms here. “Steel tiffin carriers from Salem, ball bearings from Coimbatore,” are among the preferred stuff for making the more potent steel bombs, says a political worker in Thalassery. The bombs are made in remote village homes, stockpiled in abandoned compounds, even party offices and buildings that few cops would risk raiding in normal course, often even disused village wells and rubbish bins. Party-inclined village blacksmiths, paid handsomely, churn out regular supplies of swords, axes and special equipment like the popular ‘S’ shaped stabbing knives from hard steel, including from old suspension leaves of trucks. Samples from bomb batches are duly tested and passed before handing them to the political sponsors, in deserted quarries and compounds. Usually, banana trees are used to test newly made hatchets and to train greenhorn assault teams.
Sometimes the stocked political bombs forget whom to kill or maim. A few years ago, a little Tamil orphan boy picking rags in Kannur (someone with a black humour had given him the name Amavasi, meaning lunar eclipse) rummaged in a rubbish bin to find a steel container. Amavasi had never seen a bomb before. It blew off both his hands. An NGO later took him in—after renaming him Poornachandran, which means full moon.
Another is Madathumkandi Surendran, a mason of Ponniath village. His pickaxe hit metal while digging a house’s foundation in November 1994—a hidden steel bomb, again. It blew up in his face, injuring both his eyes. No party went to his aid since he belonged to none.
Much of the mostly nocturnal bomb making takes place in or around the many “party villages”. Entire villages have been taken over by the parties who control them and ferociously defend them from incursion by other parties. The CPM, naturally has the largest number of these here, followed by the BJP-RSS. The non-cadre based Congress has only a few. Party villages are where the parties concerned decide who buys or sells property there, who moves in or out, who gets invited to marriages and funerals—sometimes even what newspapers are read, who marries whom. These are easily identified, all the electric posts leading to them wear the respective party colours and stenciled or scrawled symbols, some even have welcome boards such as “welcome to the communist village”, or massive hammers and sickles in concrete. Most Red villages have red-festooned buildings, local clubs, reading rooms and streets bearing portraits, slogans and names of men from the local and international communist pantheons, besides the dead from the battles with the Congress and the RSS. The saffron ones sport huge lotuses, trishuls, flags and typical street names like Shivji Nagar and Durga Nagar, apart from names of Sangh men the CPM had killed.
In these transgressing political opponents are seldom dealt with kindly. One who did is C.H. Suresh Babu, mandal president of the Congress in the 9th ward of Mokeri, a village the RSS was trying to make its own. He filed his nomination in the local bodies poll three years ago, despite threats. Four nights later, a bunch of RSS men caught him in a dark village street with steel clubs. He spent over a month in hospital and is immobile from waist down now.
The hit teams don’t like their quarries escaping a planned strike. Last week, a masked RSS hit squad broke down the door of the CPM’s branch secretary Rajesh in Kavumbhagom. They found only his 65-year-old mother Sarada there. Both her legs were broken with iron rods. Sarada, recovering at the CPM-sponsored Thalassery Cooperative Hospital, is still in shock. In Kathirur, CPM men who came for BJP worker Kunnummel Chandrika, beheaded her cow last Tuesday. In Pulluvam, the hitmen cut off the head of BJP man Balan’s dog.
THERE is a pattern to everything in Kannur. The CPM men are almost always taken to the party’s own well-guarded Thalassery Cooperative Hospital, the saffron brigade takes its casualties to the Congress-sponsored Indira Gandhi Hospital farther down. Neither side wants to risk their casualties being attacked inside a hospital.
But there is no guarantee here. Even a spouse actively supporting the opposite party is no guarantee of safety here. Praseetha, wife of Prakash Babu of Pernthattil, a BJP worker and a truck driver, is a CPM worker employed in the CPM-run Dinesh Bidi Cooperative. But on October 26, 2000, time when the local death tally of the period favoured the RSS, Babu driving a firewood truck in the wee hours was an easy target. Ten men waylaid him on the street, cut open his head, then severed his wrist and took it away. He lives on a subsistence allowance from the BJP-RSS now.
Not being an active supporter of either side may be no insurance either. The only thing 65-year-old Elancheri Kumaran, a coconut plucker of Kappummel, had to do with the CPM was voting for the party at the elections. On the night of January 13, 1997, Kumaran ran out of his bidis and walked across the road near his home to buy some. A bunch of men led by an RSS man living next door, a man he had known for years, stepped out of the shadows and threw a bomb. It took away one of his legs below the knee. Infection set in soon after, and the doctors amputated much of his remaining leg.
THE many narrow escape lanes in the area and plenty of cheap 100 cc motorcycles to be bought and junked mean the hit men can strike at any hour. K.P. Kumaran also known as Valsan, a local grocer and branch secretary of the CPM in Chalakara, was attacked in broad daylight by eight motorcycle-borne men last November in his shop. “They kicked me down and cut off my right wrist with a sword. Then a man took out a short axe, kept swinging it till my right leg was cut off at the knee,” recalls Valsan, who underwent a Rs 5 lakh, 16-hour long microvascular surgery at Kochi to get his wrist and leg joined back. But he has no sensation in or control over either, and is confined to a wheel chair, lifted and moved by relatives when the pain is more bearable.
But for Valsan, it has been a double tragedy. His ailing 38-year-old wife, Mahila, went into depression soon after the attack and never got out of it. She died last month and their relatives now take care of the couple’s two children.
CPM district secretary P. Sasi points out the case of Harindran, a taxi driver and party secretary in Panur. The RSS attacked him on a crowded road while he was ferrying school kids home. “They threw out the screaming kids, cut off Harindran’s head, hacked his wrist off. They carried away the severed hand in a plastic shopping bag, we later came to know that was since the hit team had a student on his first strike, and he was to present the hand before his gurus.” RSS sources, however, deny this story about the cut hand taken away as gurudakshina.
Police sources say the two sides have lately been hiring ‘quotation’ killers from places like Mangalore. Both the RSS and CPM leaders refute that. “We are a mass-based party and it is the lay people who retaliate when our comrades are murdered,” says P. Sasi, the Kannur CPM chief.
More insight comes from a man in Kannur, one of CPM’s chief hit men till sometime ago until he fell out. “Nothing is done by the ranks without proper authorisation in both the RSS and the CPM,” he says.
Significantly, almost all the dead since the bloody political killings began here in the 1970s have been the poor. The exceptions have been the likes of P. Jayarajan, one of the state’s senior CPM leaders, who was left for dead at his Kannur home, only to recover. On the other side are the likes of Kannur’s former RSS Saha Karyavah C Sadanandan —CPM men cut off both his legs—the police took him to hospital carrying the legs in a plastic sack.
Both parties here take care of their injured. Each series of bombings means injuries and high hospital bills. CPM sources say the party has already spent close to Rs 1 crore on medical and support bills in recent years. The RSS-BJP helps out its victims too, but is obviously not as cash rich as the CPM.
Violence is something Kannur can no longer afford.

The message to CPM is loud and clear: Don't think that Hindus are dumb animals ready to be massacred in a butchery. CPM will learn a lesson they will never forget in their lives, not even in Kerala where they temporarily control state power with the connivance of 10 Janpath Italian prima donna.

A prayer for peace in Kannur

There are a lot of TV clippings to show that stones were thrown at the demonstrators from the terrace of the CPM headquarters. Chairs and other pieces of furniture thrown at the demonstrators from the windows of the multi-storey building lay scattered on the road as a proof of Communist thuggery.
Butchers of Kannur are pretending to be apostles of peace and non-violence. The party notorious for killing and maiming innocent people for their adhering to a social philosophy and ideology different from theirs is shouting from the top of the CPM headquarters - the very place at which they had stored stones and other missiles to teach a lesson to peaceful demonstrators - that their office was “attacked” and accusing RSS-BJP of violating democratic norms. Lies, even if spread with the willing cooperation of left-oriented media houses, have no legs to stand on. There are a lot of TV clippings to show that stones were thrown at the demonstrators from the terrace of the CPM headquarters. Chairs and other pieces of furniture thrown at the demonstrators from the windows of the multi-storey building lay scattered on the road as a proof of Communist thuggery. Did the pro-RSS demonstrators got to the roof to throw stones at their own colleagues assembled outside the building? The CPM leaders that instigated their cadres to chase away the demonstrators by force can’t be absolved of the responsibility of violence during the demonstration, their protests to the contrary on the floor of Parliament notwithstanding. Will Delhi Police please explain why no FIR was registered against them despite repeated appeals by the BJP?
Several hundred citizens belonging to BJP, Hindu Manch and several other Hindu outfits had assembled outside the New Delhi headquarters of the CPM to lodge a strong protest against the recent killing of five Sangh swayamsevaks in Kannur district. It was slated to be a peaceful expression of anger and disgust by the people of national capital against the atrocities committed by CPM cadres. The timing was perfect. The CPM central committee was meeting that day, Kerala CM was expected to be participating in the meeting, and there was adequate media presence outside the CPM headquarters. The organisers of the protest say their purpose was to hold a symbolic protest to focus national attention on the mayhem created by CPM goons in killing fields of Kannur. The citizens - many of them in their 40s and 50s - were taken aback when they were greeted by stones thrown at them from the terrace of the building. Soon, CPM cadres started hitting them with missiles from the windows of the office building. They say they saw top CPM leaders - Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yachuri - inciting their cadres. The Rapid Action Force soon arrived and got into action. They cane charged and fired tear gas shells injuring several protestors. A section of the crowd retaliated and threw back the stones hurled at them. There were injuries on both sides, demonstrators being the worse sufferers. Several of them have been arrested by the police on false charges.
Yachuri wailed about the damage caused to his car in the clash between demonstrators and CPM cadres. The comrade has no time to worry about the fate of those attacked by his goons in Kerala. Dehli Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, went to absurd lengths to woo the Communists with whose support her party is in power at the Centre. She made the totally false and motivated allegation that leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, had carried stones in his official car. No one expects a person holding such a high position to accuse her political opponents of such unthinkable crimes. She should either prove the charge or tender a public apology to the BJP leader. Such wild allegations need to be properly investigated. It is, therefore, imperative that a transparent and independent enquiry be ordered into the unfortunate incidents outside CPM headquarters. There were noisy scenes and verbal clashes in both Houses of Parliament over the violence. BJP benches put the comrades in the dock over violence in Kerala. Communists and Congressmen shed tears over the Delhi incident conveniently forgetting that they were the ones to set precedents in this regard. It were these parties that had held violent demonstrations outside the BJP headquarters in the wake of the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya. Let the political class arrive at a consensus not to hold demonstrations outside the offices of political parties and cultural organisations to avoid unnecessary bitterness.
Misuse of police and the administration by the CPM in West Bengal is well documented in books and has been widely reported in the media, particularly after Nandigram. Kerala is no exception. There is spurt in the killing spree every time the CPM returns to power. Intolerant of dissent as the Communists are, they were in jitters when they found a large number of CPM cadres disillusioned with Marxism and communist methodology drifting towards the RSS because of latter’s nationalist ideology and spirit of selfless service. Unlike in most other states where RSS is stronger among urban middle classes, in Kerala it took strong roots among fishermen in coastal areas. RSS attracting a large number of CPM cadres belonging to poorer sections of the society was totally unpalatable to the Communists. They resorted to threats and abuses to check the drift. When this did not work, the Communist goons resorted to physical attacks. A large number of RSS workers were maimed and killed. The RSS suffered in silence hoping that the guilty would be brought to justice. That did not happen. The police rarely arrested the culprits. When it did, prosecuting agency saw to it that none was punished. Ultimately, people, including friends and relatives of victims, lost patience and retaliated. Rest is history.
Tellicherry - the home town of P Vijyan , CPM State Secretary, and K. Blakrishnan, the Home Minister - has a history of attacks on RSS workers. Fifty five RSS-BJP workers of this area lost their lives in attacks by CPM goons during the past four decades. It is widely believed that Vijayan and Balakrishnan played a major role in converting the town and its neighbourhood into killing fields.
Citizens’ protests in Delhi and other parts of the country have served the purpose of focusing national attention on the gruesome happenings. Meanwhile nothing will be lost in making yet another effort to bring the warring groups to the negotiating table. RSS-BJP leaders had in the past made such moves that brought peace to the area, though temporarily. One only hopes and prays that peace returns to the area that had suffered long because of violence and counter violence.

For several years dogmatic Marxist ideology has developed many steps closer to its goal of "wiping the Hindu nation off the map". Marxists have joined with several dogmatic, fundamentalist ideologies and British colonialists to de-structure and dismantle Hindu society. In collaboration with our enemies, Marxists have made several attempts to destroy the "oldest surviving culture" and have made several "apocalyptic utterances" and social engineering schemes to restructure Hindu society. But Hindu society with its all inclusive, eclectic philosophy and tolerant attitudes survived and prospered.
The fall of Berlin Wall and the collapse of the bureaucratic Stalinist regimes of Russia and Eastern Europe have been heralded as the end of "Marxism".
Now Marxists who are in power in Kerala and West Bengal are rattling their sword and encouraging Marxist criminals to join with Jihadis, smugglers, bandits and mafia, whose modus operandi uses bombing, assassination, kidnapping, extortion and terror. Marxism meant in practice is bloody terrorism, deadly purges, lethal gulags, and forced labor, manufactured famines, extrajudicial executions and genocide. It is also widely known that thousands of innocent Hindus have been murdered in cold blood in Marxist ruled states in Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura. Kannur, and to some extent Thalassery, are names of districts in Kerala which have become part of India's infamy as a flawed democracy. In the latest round of bloodletting, seven lives have been lost within a span of three days. The ominous signs of the impending disaster were discernible as early as November 2007, when four RSS workers -- Sherin, Biju, Jithu and Shaji -- were brutally attacked over a three day period between November 3 and 5. Their assailants were the CPI(M) cadre and the only provocation they could possibly offer was the fact that they were RSS activists.
Biju, whose legs got paralysed in the attack, also suffered grievous injuries on his head. Three fingers of his left hand were cut off. He is still in hospital in a critical condition. Jithu has lost his eye sight, whereas Shaji is unable to talk, as his vocal cord has been ruptured.
Matters did not end there. Lajesh, a Mandal Karyavah of the Sangh, was attacked at Thalassery on December 15, 2007, causing him multiple injuries. Also, on February 15, 2008, Ramesh Babu, a swayamsevak, was attacked at Thalassery itself, in which he got severe neck injuries. On February 29, Sajith and Satish, two other swayamsevaks, were attacked at Thalassery on February 29, 2008.
On March 5, MP Sumesh, the Thalassery taluk Sharirik Sikshan Pramukh of the Sangh, was brutally attacked at about 2.45 pm when he was emerging from a hotel after having his lunch. In the attack, Suresh, a popular worker of the Sangh, received multiple injuries on his legs, hands, face and head. He is still battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at the Calicut Medical College Hospital.
The very next day, two other Sangh workers, Nikhil, a lorry cleaner, and Sathyan, a construction worker, were killed in separate attacks. Nikhil, who was in his truck, was pulled out and killed on the spot. Sathyan, who was at his work site, was forcibly carried to an unknown place and decapitated and his torso was dumped at a distance from his house.
The very next day, Mahesh, a BJP worker, was hacked to death while he was standing in front of a shop at his native village, Chittariparamba. Mahesh was a former CPI(M) cadre who joined the Sangh in 2004 and, as a result, to wreck vengeance on him, his house was totally demolished by the party cadre and the swayamsevaks rebuilt it.
On March 7, Suresh Babu, yet another Sangh worker, was killed in his own house. The CPI(M) cadre, who barged into his house in the dead of the night, hacked him to death after dragging him out of the house. Apart from this, two other Sangh workers, Aneesh and Dineshan, were brutally attacked on March 6, 2008 and are in the Calicut Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
As an ideology, Marxism is totally intolerant and is opposed to any form of pluralism. To the CPI(M) murder is a signature tune. In West Bengal, more than 20,000 people have been killed by the CPI(M) since 1977. In Kerala, especially in Kannur district, the The CPI(M) has exclusive "party villages", where they never tolerate any other ideology or thought processes to either to take root or to flourish. During the latest discussion held with the Home Minister, the Sangh leaders had identified some 35 places, which includes his own village, Kodiyeri, where Sangh sakhas could not be held because of the highhandedness of the party cadre.
At Kodiyeri, a set of former party cadre joined the Sangh and started a sakha there under the leadership of Moozhikara Preman in 2007. Before long, Preman was murdered only for this reason. Soman, a nephew of the Home Minister, is the branch secretary of the CPI(M) at Kodiyeri. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan incidentally belongs to the Nambiar caste. However, the swayamsevaks at his native village belong to the so-called lower caste. And Soman, in his wisdom, has chosen to promulgate an "order" by which swayamsevaks were barred from walking in pairs on the roads of Pinarai. Swayamsevaks were also told to stay away from the village when his uncle came visiting. Is this not the resurrection of untouchability?
And if anyone shows the "temerity" to organise activities without prior approval by the party, the persons concerned would be dealt with ruthlessly in such a fashion that no one else would dare do such a thing thereafter. Gangadharan, a swayamsevak, was done to death a few years ago on the very day he joined duty at the panchayat office at Kallyassery, the home village of the late EK Nayanar, a party stalwart and three-time Chief Minister of Kerala. What was his fault? The party did not want an RSS man in the panchayat office of Nayanar's Kallyassery! Since 1968, 63 Sangh swayamsevaks were killed whereas the Congress lost 40 party workers, and other parties 14 all together, in the CPI(M) attacks in Kannur district alone.
The violence unleashed by the party cadres would put even the jihadi forces to shame. For instance, the way they butchered Pannyannur Chandran, an energetic and promising leader of the BJP, in broad daylight in front of his wife and others, for having contested the election and secured more votes, belying the expectations of the CPI(M); the macabre hacking to death of Jayakrishnan Master, the State vice-President of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha, on December 1, 1999, in front of his students while teaching all go to prove that the CPI(M)'s culture is counter to the Indian ethos.

Kerala voters should do well to kick out the CPM murdering goons from controlling the state. If goons control the state, this is what happens, Chandy. Kannur has become synonymous with political murder and represents the very worst in democratic politics. The violence has been raging for three decades now and should be opposed at any cost. Naturally, the first question that comes to mind is -- who is responsible and why? The short answer is the CPI(M). Thalassery and Kannur districts are the prime bases of the Marxists. The Home Minister is from this part of north Kerala.
It is not only the RSS which has lost its workers to the CPI(M)'s murderous tactics, several Youth Congress and Kerala Students' Union activists have also been killed. Some local Congress leaders have also lost their lives to the Communist killers. Though I am a Congressman and it is my duty to maintain equal distance from the RSS, which is a communal force, I must say that it is the CPI(M) which has got to be opposed more vehemently.
The Congress has taken a political stand that in politics there is no space for violence and that the Kannur killings are a blot on democracy. Earlier, there were some instances in which the Congress was also involved but the leadership has taken a strong stand that people taking violence and violent course in politics does not have any place in party and the Congress workers are now not involved in any political violence in the district.
The Government of the day, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front, instead of finding a solution to the endless cycle of killings followed by revenge killings, is stoking the fire. It was unfortunate that a leader of the stature of Mr Pinarayi Vijayan should have stooped to the level of calling on Marxist cadre to "return with compound interest" any death of a party comrade. The CPI(M) Politburo member said this at a public programme in Thalassery. Shortly after this vitriolic speech, seven people lost their lives in Thalassery. Then, BJP vice-president M Venkiah Naidu went to Kerala and threatened the CPI(M) that it would be given a fitting reply in other States. The unfortunate incidents outside the CPI(M) headquarters in Delhi, AKG Bhavan, may have been a result of this speech. However, the matter is under investigation. As a Congressman I condemn the perpetrators, whichever side they were from.
Murders and revenge murders have been going on in these two north Kerala district since 1969. But, whenever the State came under Congress rule, places like Thalassery, Panoor and Nadapuram became peaceful. This happened not due to some magic wand waved by Mr AK Antony or Mr Oomen Chandy, but because the Chief Minister of the time, who also held the Home portfolio, allowed Kerala Police to professionally manage the situation. But the Marxists emasculate the police with untoward interference. And violence returns. Therefore, the CPI(M)'s responsibility multiplies.
We gave Kerala Police, an otherwise efficient force, full freedom to catch the actual culprits. In these politically volatile places there is a long tradition of keeping lists of culprits and criminals maintained in the respective political offices. When the UDF was in power, we asked the police not to be influenced by these lists, but carry out investigations and arrests after non-partisan inquiry. Nobody was above the law to us and we did our best to keep the number of incidents in check.
Another major step taken by the police was that other than the actual culprits those involved in conspiracies were also charged. Naturally, this meant several local-level Marxists had to be arrested. The CPI(M) began to launch huge protest demonstrations against this. The United Democratic Front had taken a collective decision that the Police ought to have the upper hand on this issue as they are the best judges of the situation. The result was there for all to see. The contrast with the present situation is equally stark.
In 1999, the Marxists committed horrific murders in Kannur. The RSS, too, gave it back on some occasions. Immediately after the UDF assumed office in 2001, the violence stopped in Kannur. Then, in 2006, the LDF returned to power. Soon, violence resumed in Thalassery. I, along with Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala went on a Shanthiyatra from Kannur to Thalassery. The CPI(M) not only mocked the Congress for this, but also encouraged its activists to pelt stones at the processionists as we went around the districts. It was in the CPI(M) pockets that the intensity of the stone throwing increased. This in itself shows how intolerant that party and its leaders are.
Another important point to note is that the leaders of the CPI(M) and the RSS had assured Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in separate peace meetings with them that there would not be further violence. It is intriguing to note that that there were no further clashes for some time after this assurances, which goes to prove the involvement of the top leaders of both sides. But when the violence resumed, we have no option but blame the CPI(M) as it is controlling the Government and it is the Home Minister's duty to ensure the protection of all lives. Moreover, Mr Balakrishnan is from Thalassery district.
In democracy all political parties claim that they are working for the betterment of the people. If what they preach is true then why are these parties going for each other's throats? The Government should not act in a partisan manner. It is guilty of viewing its political opponents differently from the masses. The tragedy is that those who lost their lives in these clashes and those injured and maimed for life are all from the lower strata of society. The majority of them are autorickshaw drivers. These people were the only breadwinners for their families. What words of comfort would the leaders have for the widows and children of those killed? The CPI(M)'s ideological hollowness becomes very clear to the people after this. The party which claims to be working for the toiling masses does not think twice before encouraging a culture of political violence in which only the poor get killed.

Sri Mohanrao Bhagwat on the violence in Kannur
Five RSS activists have been killed and scores grievously injured in renewed attacks by the CPM cadres since 5 March 2008 in the North Kerala district of Kannur. Houses of more than 40 Swayamsevaks have been destroyed in this violence.
It is claimed that the Communist Party of Kerala was formed in Pinarayi in Kannur district and the Party considers this district as its bastion. The RSS work was started in 1943 in this district and continued peacefully for more than 25 years. Many CPM workers were attracted to the RSS work and joined in large numbers. However, unable to tolerate its growing strength the CPM resorted to murder politics since 1969. Sri Ramakrishnan, a daily wage earner and the Mukhyashikshak of Thalassery (Vadikkal) who faced the Communist terrorism courageously and started several Shakas in and around Thalassery, became their first victim and was brutally killed in 1969. Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, present State Secretary of CPM who hails from this district, was one of the main accused in that murder case. The present Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who also hails from this district, was an accused in the murder of another Swayamsevak Sri Karimbil Satheesan.
So far more than 60 Swayamsevaks have been killed by the CPM in this district alone. Even aged women were also not spared. On May 22, 2002 Smt. Ammu Amma (72 years) was killed in a bomb attack by CPI (M) workers while she was returning in a jeep after attending the funeral of a Swayamsevak Sri Uthaman, who was killed in the CPI (M) attack the previous day.
Peace Efforts
The RSS had all alongwelcomed and supported all peace efforts. In order to avoid further violence, the founder of the BMS, Sri Dattopant Thengidi and Sri P. Parameswaran, the the Director of Deendayal Research Institute, Delhi had discussions with Communist stalwarts like EMS Namboodripad and Ramamurthy in Delhi. The leaders of the RSS and the CPM had similar discussions in Kerala too. But before the ink on the peace declaration dried up, there were unprovoked attacks on RSS cadres. Committed to maintaining peace the RSS had agreed to sit with the CPM leaders again and sign a document for peace in 1999 at the initiative of the highly respected Js. Krishna Iyer and the then Chief Minister E.K. Nayanar. However, just two days after this initiative the CPM cadres attacked the State Vice President of BJYM Sri Jayakrishnan Master and murdered him in a most gruesome manner in front of small children in his class room. Peace conferences became totally ineffective with no positive result whatsoever.
But for several years, despite serious provocation the RSS stuck to its commitment of maintaining peace and never retaliated. However it resulted in loosing a number of good activists only while the CPM became more brutal. Whenever they are in power in the State their brutality crosses all limits with the help of obliging Government machinery.
The latest killing spree that started in March claimed the lives of 5 Swayamsevaks so far. On March 5 (Sivarathri day) Sri Sumesh, Thalassery Taluk Sharirik Shikshan Pramukh was attacked near Thalassery town. He lost his left hand and is still in Intensive Care Unit. Sri Sumesh always used to represent Sangh in the peace conferences. On the same day a Swayamsevak Nikhil (22), a lorry driver and the sole bread winner of a poor family was killed. Another Swayamsevak, Sri Sathyan, a mason, was virtually dragged away from his work place and beheaded. His headless body was thrown by the wayside near his house. On the very next day i.e. on March 6, 2008 Sri Mahesh of Kuthuparamba was hacked to death. His head was also severed off. Again on the next day i.e, March 7, 2008 Sri Suresh Babu of Kodiyeri and Sri K.V.Surendran (65) of Illathuthazha were brutally assassinated. Thus within 3 days 5 young lives belonging to the working class were taken away. More than a dozen youths have been maimed and become handicapped.
Honest Officers not tolerated
Honest Police officers were never tolerated. On Jan 12, 2008, one CPM worker Sri Dhanesh was killed by some unknown miscreants. The CPM accused the RSS, but the DySP in charge of the investigation Sri Habeeb Rahman categorically stated that RSS was not at all involved in this murder. Immediately afterwards that upright officer was transferred from the district. On Jan 26, 2008, one notorious criminal Jijesh was killed. His nickname 'Veerappan' itself reveals his nature. Again CPM blamed Sangh. In both the cases the RSS district leadership had promptly rebutted the charges in press conferences. DSP Sri Manoj Abraham after investigation stated that NDF (a Muslim extremist organization) was involved in it and RSS was innocent. Again that no-nonsense officer was also transferred summarily.
Shakha Ban in Kannur
There is a virtual ban on Sangh shakhas by the CPM in the areas of their dominance in Kannur. The basic right to conduct organization work is being denied not only to the RSS but to all other political parties including Congress and CPI. Examples are so many.
The shakha at Engayilpeedika at Kodiyeri, the home-town of State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, was attacked and disallowed to function by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's nephew and his henchmen 8 years ago. Since then repeated attempts to restart the shakha there have been foiled by the CPM cadres. The CPM is also enforcing a code- a kind of Section 144 - applicable to swayamsevaks in that village. If they want to live there they should not meet or even sit together. They should walk around or travel alone. They should not be seen in public when the home minister visits the area. The fate of the shakha at Kodiyeri is not an isolated one. There are up to 50 places in Kannur where the Sangh is not allowed to hold shakhas. Any attempt to 'violate' this ban would be met with brutal force.
KPCC president Ramesh Chennitahla during the last elections had brought out a report in which he cited that in 265 booths in Kannur district no party agent except that of the CPM was allowed to sit.
It is noteworthy that the judiciary has, on several occasions, reprimanded the State Police for not preventing such human rights abuses by the CPM cadres in Kannur. Particularly scathing were the observations of the High Court a couple of days ago, which openly said that only the presence of Central Forces can restore normalcy in the region.
It is to highlight these acts of Stalinism and fascism of the CPM that some members of the RSS and other organisations including a large number of women spontaneously marched in a peaceful manner to the CPM HQ in Delhi. Betraying their Nandigram-style intolerance the CPM cadres repeated what they have been doing in Kannur – attacked the peaceful demonstrators with brickbats and chairs – resulting in unfortunate violence on the Delhi streets.
I appeal to all the right-thinking and peace-loving citizens of the country to raise their voice against this fascist and Stalinist face of the CPM in the larger interest of our democracy and freedom. I call upon the RSS Swayamsevaks allover the country to stand by our Swayamsevak brethren who have become victims of the brutalities of the CPM and expose the true nature and face of it which has no place in a country with such a hoary tradition of tolerance and pluralistic ethic.
As far as the RSS in Kerala is concerned, it would zealously guard its Constitutional right of freedom of expression, association and propagation.

More than a hundred thousand civilians have been murdered in cold blood since 1986 in ideological hate attacks in India. Most of them invariably were Hindus. Though Hindus are there in every party and state machinery, there has been hardly a voice of reason, angst and pain raised effectively against assaults on Hindus during all these years, as if Hindus still feel they are living under an oppressive un-Hindu regime and hence it's better to suffer in silence and be thankful to the oppressors for small mercies.
It's amazing. Is this the government for only those who form the ruling coalition or for all Indians?
So much humiliation and insults have gone deep into our blood that even to say, oh we were attacked not for any other reason but just because we wore saffron, we were Hindus, makes many of us feel embarrassed and declare oh, what's the use of remembering what happened to our ancestors, it will further create bad blood and hatred. But this is 'true' only when Hindus are victims. In every single other incident, its 'prudent', 'wise' and 'essentially readable a thousand times'. Movies on Hindu 'lumpens and aggressors' are facilitated to bag state awards and included in international film festivals. I have seen a couple of such aggressively secular 'missionary' documentaries. It is difficult to appreciate the tone and tenor of utterly hateful commentaries, which rely more on fabricated unsustainable allegations and communally surcharged picturisation.
A precipitated hate against Hindus in an influential part of polity and media showed its first face, post- partition, immediately after the Tricolour was unfurled at the Red Fort. The Mirpur, Mujaffarbad, Pindi massacres of Hindus put even the Nazis to shame. It's difficult to re-count those incidents of blood and gore and unimaginable brutalities on Hindu women and children. It was so horrifying that Hindus dread even to remember that. But it figures nowhere in media, though they recount world war, Pol Pot ,Vietnam but not massacres of Hindus in the erstwhile East Pakistan and Kashmir. In North East, National Socialist Council of Nagaland (IM), which is fighting to crate a greater Nagaland for Christ, United Liberation Front of Assam and many such fronts in Tripura and Manipur, Maoists extremists active from Orissa to the states of UP, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and Islamist Jihadis under various banners have been targetting Hindus under different pretexts like in Assam they call them as Hindi- speaking people and in Kashmir its just KPs(Kashmiri Pandits).
And now, we have Kannur.
What has changed in this sixty-one-year of progress, secular rule and increasingly impressive listings in Forbes list?
Hindus being targeted just for their colour of faith and assertive Hindutwa is a matter of embarrassment.
Two recent incidents have made me feel like re-visiting Godhra, where Hindus were victims and Hindus were blamed for having organised their death in a burning inferno! Everyone condemned Gujarat riots where Hindus and Muslims both were victims, but never even for once we have seen a secularist answering a question-why were Hindus burnt alive in Sabarmati express?
Why not a single secular human rightist has taken up the case of Godhra victims?
Why Gujarat riots means only 'Muslims killed' and hundreds of Hindus killed are simply forgotten as if they were unmentionable dirt? Every single Indian facing injustice, no matter what the colour of his faith is, must get support from all patriots. Why colour of death decides the hues of support?
In the killing fields of Kannur, five RSS-BJP workers were hacked to death in a matter of four days ( http://tarun-vijay.blogspot.com/ ). Those killed were low income group wage earners like auto rickshaw and truck drivers. Since CPM has come to power in Kerala in 2006, 20 RSS workers have been murdered for their saffron leanings. No animosity of any other count but just belonging to a different and growing ideology was their crime. In 2003, a teacher K.T. Jayakrishnana was hacked to death before the tiny tot children he was teaching. On 17th September 1996, two ABVP activists, Anu and Kim, were cornered in a college in Parumala and threatened to be killed for joining a saffron student's organisation. Fearing death too close, the students ran and tried to swim across the Pampa river, but the SFI goons stoned them so severely that they were forced drowned. Even the women washing near the river tried to throw their sarees to the drowning students, but were stopped by Communist student leaders. Both the dead youngsters were the only offspring of their families. The killings of RSS workers in Kannur have a background to it. It was here that the Communist Party was formed in Kerala in 1940 and the place is considered a stronghold of the Left in the state. Since early sixties, the RSS began its work here and soon workers from lower income group, especially the backward, dalit segment were attracted towards it. This angered the CPM cadre and leadership and to harass and instil a fear in the CPM workers who were joining RSS, the first murder of a saffron worker took place in 1967. His name was Ramakrishnan. I have received a letter describing why violence is not stopping in Kannur against Hindu workers from Sadananda master, a teacher in Kannur whose both legs were chopped off in 1994 because he was organising RSS work there. He is still a teacher, and continues to do RSS work.
From Nandigram to Kannur, Communist terrorism has taken different shapes and shades. Their ideological cohort Maoists have emerged the largest single murderer-outfits responsible for killings and looting ( http://www.mha.nic.in/Annual-Reports/ar0607_Eng.pdf ). Yet they have captured the space for peace initiatives and candle light marches!! They don't know, a worker killed may have a red or a saffron colour, but the colour of the tears of their mothers remain the same. Ideological apartheid and a policy to annihilate the differing people is a legacy of the Communist and Islamic intolerant groups. This creates a chain reaction. Unfortunately media too takes a narrow sectarian view and sides with groups that thrive on a secular bias against anything saffron.
The entire Europe and India's anti-fascists churn out tones of literature against Nazi barbarities and make it sure that the new generation is taught about how bad Hitler was. This is considered an essential exercise in secularising the society and building brain walls against recurrence of such dark periods. But if in the same spirit of building resistance to the barbarities of Dark Age represented by Aurangzeb, an exhibition is sought to be displayed, it is uprooted and closed by the secular state power.
This happened in Chennai where police ordered forcible closure of an innocuously presented exhibition on Aurangzeb, according to Mogul documents.
The exhibition was organised by a French journalist Francois Gautier, who is an ardent devotee of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an apostle of universal brotherhood and peace. The purpose was to depict Aurangzeb as he was seen by Mogul chroniclers and his confidants. The secular politicians are afraid of two things -showing disrespect to Aurangzeb and showing respect to his blood brother Dara Shikoh, a noble hearted Muslim whom he got murdered. Its important to recollect that not only the dreaded terrorists active in Kashmir like to call their actions of brutality in the name of Islam as continuing the 'great legacy of Aurangzeb' but in Pakistan the craze amongst the anti-India leaders is to decorate themselves with the title of Aurangzeb in order to show their devotion and zeal to the cause of their religion.
This situation says a lot about the dispossession of the Hindus and their severe loss of memory resulting in disinterestedness in resisting assaults on their soul. Every party has Hindus as leaders, but they feel to speak for Hindus is a matter of political loss. They shine individually but fail collectively. In spite of being the victims of hate and assaults since centuries, there is not a single museum of holocaust in this land depicting the long journey of Hindus through indescribable travails and their glorious history of resistance. There is not a single institution of excellence in India devoted to the study of Hindu resistance and assaults on their body and mind. Indian leaders, mostly Hindus, have earned hundreds of crores, amassed great amount of wealth, but most of it is spent in downsizing their colleagues, living in extravaganza, launching missiles against their rivals rather than using it, for once to reawaken the memories of their collective glorious past and struggles of their ancestors to inspire and lighten up a grand future. Its an intellectual war to be fought with warriors of wisdom rather than political gatekeepers and durbans. A community which forgets insults and doesn't make amends to put up a courageous resistance can't hope to weave a future of respect. It's not against any other people but on the contrary a Hindu solidarity alone is a guarantee of peaceful co-existence and equality testified by our long history. And it certainly means a society without any caste discriminations, asserting one single identity-the Indian Tricolour. A Hindu observing caste or region based discriminations and prejudice is less than a Hindu. Make him feel ashamed of his narrow-mindedness. Breaking the stranglehold of caste in politics and social mobility corridors is another Independence struggle to realise the Indian dream.
There can't be an American dream deleting the memories of Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln and Martin Luther King and making Americans feel embarrassed about their Latin Christian character that defines the colour of the land. There can't be an Indian dream by targeting Hindus for their legitimate saffron assertions.
